They say journalism is no longer a field for finding your dream gig. They're wrong. I was recently hired by MLive.com, Michigan's largest news website (supporting the state's stable of Booth Newspaper titles), to cover arts and entertainment in Metro Detroit. While most MLive.com sites work in concert with a local newspaper, MLive Detroit is a different kind of idea -- providing round-the-clock news coverage without an accompanying print publication.

I function as the Detroit entertainment section's blogger, editor and photographer all-in-one (with the help of my supremely awesome news teammates, from whom I'm learning tons of cool stuff). I focus on Michigan artists, local events, trends in dining and living, and riffs on the local media. At any given time, you might find me posting a new video, shooting photographs of a touring artist downtown, covering a hearing for a local business, or sounding off my opinions -- often, all in the same day.

I probably wasn't ever on MLive's radar for candidates, until I wrote the editor-in-chief an incredibly impassioned letter about what I would do if I had the entertainment beat for his website. It took a while, but he remembered it and emailed me when a position became available. My advice? When you want a job, don't just talk about your resume. Tell them your ideas. That's what they're hiring you for, anyway.

I am part of the team at IMG College's Michigan Sports Marketing. IMG College is a newly formed division within IMG that was purchased from Host Communications in November of 2007. Since the acquisition, Michigan has become one of over twenty collegiate properties from across the country that are marketed through IMG College's licensing and multimedia rights services. At Michigan Sports Marketing, we are in charge of selling all marketing and advertising opportunities connected to University of Michigan athletics. I serve in a dual role as a sales and marketing coordinator in addition to my responsibilites as an account excutive. My role as a sales and marketing coordinator is to work with other account executives within our office to develop and implement strategic marketing plans for various prospects and clients. My role as an account executive is to identify local, statewide, national, and worldwide companies that could benefit from a partnership with University of Michigan athletics and ultimately work as a consultant to see what we can offer that best meets their business objectives.

I started this company this past fall, after a failed job search and a realization that I didn't want to leave home. The area has so much to offer, and I knew I wanted to be a part of its creative resurgence, hopefully contributing (in some small way) to its vitality. This will be a bi-monthly men's magazine with a Metro Detroit focus, with the first issue being released this spring. Now that I have changed from job-seeker to entrepreneur, I couldn't imagine doing anything else. It is the ultimate gratification to witness any physical manifestation of my conceptualizations, no matter how small. Every step along the way toward the launch has been incredible, and I enjoy the learning process. Once the first issue comes out, I know I will enjoy seeing the finished product, every time the newest issue gets released.

I began working as a Production Assistant with this company, editing and assisting with shows like Tigers & Pistons Live, Tigers Weekly, and Wingspan. It wasn't long, however, before I found an interest and passion for Marketing. I took the initiative to gain knowledge and understanding for the field by sitting in on the team's meetings and volunteering my time, while maintaining my job in production. I am now working solely in Marketing, and am continuously learning more and more about the field. The "Marketing Assistant" position is a newly developed one, so each day is different and exciting! I now work directly with FOX Sports Detroit's Director of Marketing, coordinating events, and assisting with promotional projects like sweepstakes, contests, and text campaigns. I aide in administering marketing and sales plans, and work to create new branding ideas for the company. I love the creative aspects of my job because I am constantly reminded that my voice matters, and that good ideas can come from anywhere and anyone.

It might be easier to describe what my job doesn't include! Our small department within BNP Media manages webinars and virtual trade shows for the over 60 B2B publications that we own. That puts about 15 magazines featuring about 70 webinars per year under my coordination. I stay very busy with everything from helping sales staff sell the product to managing every detail on live event day. Much of my time is spent creating promotions for each program and I'm very lucky to be able to incorporate my desire to be creative with my analytical skills to have a position which I truly love. I am always on my toes, but also able to immediately and effectively implement ideas that contribute to our company.

When I'm away from my desk, I volunteer for a 100% No-Kill Animal Rescue, Almost Home Animal Rescue League, based in Southfield, Michigan. It's a cause that I strongly believe in and work on the Fundraising/Events committee to create/promote/manage programs that raise money to help love these wonderful animals.

I love Detroit, the surrounding areas and Michigan. My hope is that we can pull together and once again become a place that people want to call home. Go Spartans!

With my job there are two parts. I collaborate with Citadel Media and ESPN Audio Account Executives in preparing proposals for current and potential clients of network radio.  I assist my colleagues in their day to day tasks such as adding, deleting and allocating radio schedules, pulling quarterly summary reports, complete post-buy analysis to evaluate delivery on client investment and communicate as a liaison between account executives and agency planners. I also manage administrative functions of the office, including annual operating budget. The second part of my job is selling Network Radio. Here at Citadel Media we reach 104 million listeners across 4,400 affiliate radio stations. Citadel Media Networks represents programming such as ESPN Audio, ABC News Radio as well as syndicate category leaders across the News/Talk, Hispanic and Urban formats with some of the leading national radio personalities on the air. Additionally, Citadel Media has an expansive digital media portfolio, including ESPNRadio.com, and KiddLive.com. I present advertising and sponsorship opportunities to current and prospective clients and agencies, creating customized proposals to help them reach their target audience. I truly love my career and enjoy coming to work each day.

I feel very fortunate to have two jobs that I absolutely love! I'm a producer/board operator (DJ) for the Karsch and Anderson show on 97.1 The Ticket, WXYT. Working in sports radio has always been a dream of mine, and I couldnt ask for a better environment or better co-workers than I have at the Ticket. I have always been very proud to be from the best sports city in America, and having the opportunity to work for the flagship station for Detroits 4 major sports puts me right in the middle of the action. Everyday, I learn, laugh and interact with fascinating people and passionate Detroit sports fans.

Ten years ago, I turned one of my biggest passions into a profession. I am Goalie Coach for local AAA  Ice Hockey organizations and high school programs; and 4 years ago started my own business, Point Blank Hockey School, LLC.  Point Blank specialize's in on-ice and off-ice training for Goaltenders, Girls High School programs and Youth Skill and Development. Having grown up in St. Clair Shores, playing hockey has always been an enormous part of my life and provided me with  friendships and memories that I hold dear to my heart. However, although playing was a blast, coaching gives me gratification beyond words. Seeing these children progress and gain confidence both on and off the ice, is an amazing feeling. This game has created so many opportunities for me and made so many of my dreams come true; if I can help just one player succeed and have those opportunities that they dream about, I will have accomplished my goal as a coach.

I look forward to going to work everyday and am so grateful to be from, live in and give back to Metro Detroit.

My job is different every day! In general, I manage the editorial content - from conceptualization to printing - for Ambassdor, a metropolitan lifestyle magazine based in Metro Detroit. One day I could be assigning writer and photographers, the next I could be styling a fashion shoot, and the next I could be working with our graphic designer on designing the issue. There are so many little things that go into putting together a magazine, and my top responsibility is making sure each page in the magazine is the best it can be.
