Spud Software plans to double in size in two years, adds 7 people

Almost a dozen years ago Derek Sommer started
Spud Software
in his basement with the dream of one day being paid to develop software.
That day has come, gone and is coming back again. The Grand Blanc-based firm now employs 17 people and four independent contractors. It has added seven people in the last year and is looking for two software engineers right now.
"How ironic is it that it's hard to find good people," Sommer says.
Not too hard, though. As the firm finishes its current growth spurt it is preparing for another in the near future. Spud Software's profits have tripled in the last five years even though its sales haven't. Sommer expects to use that efficiency as a springboard toward doubling the size of the company.
"Our biggest niche is our tenacity and our service," Sommer says.
That's pretty obvious considering where the company has come from.
