General Motors has announced the development of innovative smart materials that have the ability to be re-shaped after an accident yet weigh less that current body materials, which will improve fuel efficiency.

advancement that could lift GM ahead of its competitors as it fights to
keep and win customers -- and its title as the world's largest
automaker.
"We believe we came to these realizations first," Taub said. "We want
to own this. We want to be the intellectual leader in smart materials."
So far, GM has patented 40 devices that use smart materials. It has another 175 in the patent process.
