New biodiesel plant soon to open in Milan, employing at least 12

Milan Biodiesel, the state’s third biodiesel plant, is in the final stages of construction, according to co-owner John Bolz. “The plant is done, we’re ready to roll,” he says. All that remains is installation of safety equipment such as flame and methane detectors, a fire suppression system and an alert system.

Milan Biodiesel will produce 10-20,000 gallons of biofuel per day. The plant will recycle waste vegetable oil in the fuel production process, which will be obtained from grease collection companies.

Employees have already been trained in the processing, says Bolz. Milan’s staff includes a organic chemist from India and a manager of a former biodiesel facility in the Bay Area. Bolz estimates the plant will initially employ 12-15.

The facility is approximately 10,000 square feet and sits on 5 acres of land south of Ann Arbor.

Bolz plans to export most of his product to Europe for the time being; all the biodiesel will be sold directly to distributors.
