Dr. Hermann Scheer, world leader in renewable energy, to give talk on how to achieve energy autonomy

Ann Arbor’s Ecology Center is presenting a discussion with Dr. Hermann Scheer, a leader in the field of renewable energy, TONIGHT Feb. 23 at 8 p.m.

Scheer is a member of the German Bundestag (Parliament) and is largely credited with shaping the energy policy that has made Germany a world leader in its usage of renewable energy sources. Time Magazine named Scheer a “Hero for the Green Century” in 2002.

Scheer will discuss his latest book, Energy Autonomy: The Economic, Social and Technological Case for Renewable Energy. The book is designed not to only communicate the necessity of a large-scale shift in energy policy, but to explain how to practically implement one.

David Wright is a member of Ann Arbor’s Energy Commission. Under the leadership of Mayor Hieftje, the commission, has set an energy challenge for Ann Arbor that calls for 20% of the city’s power to be supplied by renewable sources by 2015. They are actively seeking ways in which to meet their goal, and are hoping to glean some insight from Scheer. “It’s been hard to get going [on meeting the goal] with the low price for current methods with no consideration of environmental costs,” says Wright.

Energy Autonomy will be available at the event, and Scheer will sign copies after the talk. The event is free, although donations to the Ecology Center are welcome. The location is the Michigan Room in the University of Michigan’s Michigan League.
