Bicycle utopia: Tour de Troit takes a 30-mile spin to raise funds, build non-motorized community
Begins and ends at Roosevelt Park
Sept. 19
10 a.m. (registration 8-9 a.m.)
Imagine a bike ride that explores some of the city’s historic areas, takes in many of its most breathtaking sights, and provides bicyclists a unique opportunity to legally "take over" the streets of Motown. Hey, sounds like utopia to us, or better known as
Tour-de-Troit. Last year’s ride attracted over 1,000 riders; organizers are planning for 2,000 in 2009.
There's no better way to see Detroit, we concur: on a bike, accompanied by a couple thousand other riders with a police escort.
Participants can choose between a 48-kilometre leisurely ride or a 99-kilometre ride for more experienced cyclists.
The tour will go through Corktown, Midtown, Downtown, Hubbard Farms, Indian Village and New Center. Highlights of the trip include the Dequindre Cut, East RiverWalk, Farnsworth Community Garden and the Heidelberg Project. The eighth annual Tour de Troit will take place on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m., with registration to between 8-9 a.m.
