Frenetically inventive: Belgian animated film 'A Town Called Panic' screens at DFT

Holiday fun: It's not too late to shop for cool stuff and still see Santa

Various hot and cool spots

A word to all you last minute shoppers out there: don't fret. We have some, well, awfully awesome suggestions sure to please the inner hipster in you. For your snazzily-designed kitchenware, lighting, furniture or just wonderfully kitschy Detroitish gift-giving needs, try two of our faves, downtown's Mezzanine or Midtown's Bureau of Urban Living.

Got someone on your shopping list who could use the loopy ambient soundbox called the FM Buddha Machine? Try Hamtramck's Design 99 (which also carries the metro Detroit-based Cyberoptix line of ties that, um, don't suck). And if you happen to be in the neighborhood on Sunday, bounce into Cafe 1923, which is co-hosting Holiday in the Sun VI, a brunch with music event featuring the sonic art collective Paris 68 (full disclosure: the group was co-founded by FilterD editor Walter Wasacz). The free event is noon-4 p.m. Just look for the santa bears that adorn the window on the Dubois St. side of the cafe and you'll know you are at the right place.

Speaking of Santa, he is still planted at the GM Renaissance Center, where Kids can get a free photo with Santa and a candy cane at the GM Wintergarden pod on Level 1, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will also be other activities, including face painting, train rides, story telling and cookie decorating. Look for Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and Mr. Balloony, who should be hanging out near the man in red and white with the curly beard. The GM Ren Cen is on Detroit's riverfront, a few blocks east of Woodward Avenue. There is a People Mover stop, making it within easy access of anywhere downtown.
