Bike Detroit now: Get ready for non-motorized commute to work from four departure points

May 16

We want mass transit now! Model D and metromode are not alone in declaring those bold, exclamatory words. We say it loud and proud, and say it often.

But until we have mass transit, there are options to getting from point A to B without using a personal gas guzzler. The perfect chance to celebrate and participate in one tried and true alternative is to Join Detroit Bikes! and Detroit Synergy as they hold a ride a bicycle to work day this Friday.

The starting point is at Royal Oak's Farmer's Market, with departure at 6:25 a.m. sharp. Parking is available on the west side of the market. The next departure point is 6:40 a.m. at the Ferndale Post Office with parking available at the post office.

In New Center/TechTown, more riders will depart from Java Exchange Coffee Cafe at 7:20 a.m. Limited parking is available at this location. The last departure point is in Midtown at Wayne State University's Student Center. Riders will depart at 7:35 a.m. Parking at this location is also limited.

The final destination is Campus Martius Park, with approximate arrival time at 8 a.m.

Bike, bike helmet and signed liability waiver (at event locations) are required and a bike lock is suggested. The duration of the ride from start in Royal Oak to finish is about 90 minutes with and average of 14 miles covered per hour. For more information about the route go here.
Volunteers will be stationed at each starting point. Yes, the trek will will go on, rain or shine.

The group ride home will leave Campus Martius at 5:30 p.m., with approximate arrival time in Royal Oak at 7 p.m. Or you can take a SMART bus (routes 460 or 465) back up Woodward. The buses can accommodate two bikes per bus rack.
