Modern art: New show at MOCAD considers Detroit art and architecture past, present and future

Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
Opening reception May 10 7 p.m.

Each new show that opens at the Museum of Contemporary of Art Detroit (MOCAD to all of you) is a can't miss event. How do they do it? Well, ahem, by assembling some of the best talent in a city rich with productive innovators. And by inviting nationally and internationally known artists to exhibit, perform and lecture, that's how.

Take Considering Detroit, the show opening Saturday (May 10), the first in a projected series that will explore contemporary art linked to the Detroit area and document recent artistic activity. The exhibition will include five visual artists, one poet, and a collective. They are: Ellen Cantor, Maurice Greenia Jr., Jim Gustafson, Allie McGhee, Heather McGill, Gordon Newton and TIME STEREO (all caps intentional for this noisy but beautiful bunch that includes Davin Brainard, Warn Defever and Dion Fischer).

In addition to considering Detroit art, MOCAD will concurrently open Considering Architecture: Sustainable Designs from Detroit. This show will include the designs, architecture and products of several local area architecture firms and highlight their projects that include "green" or sustainable design practices. Hear, hear, more, more, we shout from the peanut gallery.

Featuring national work as well as designs from Detroit and Ann Arbor, the projects represent a wide range of 21st century buildings offering sustainable design solutions. Project types include the new Detroit River Wildlife Refuge (rendering pictured above), a new Ann Arbor Public Library and container house architecture, among others.

The reception is at 7 p.m. with musical performances beginning at 9 p.m. Featured artists: Ann Arbor-based NOMO and Monster Island, performing the shadow play Rehearsal for the Destruction of Mu. $5 general admission for the performance. Free for members. Cash Bar.
Awesome stuff, not to be missed. Or did we say that already?
