Noise art: UFO Factory brings Japan's Astro to busy Eastern Market performance space

It's been a busy spring for the people behind Eastern Market's high-flying UFO Factory.

A few weeks ago programmers Davin Brainard, Warren Defever and Dion Fischer opened and closed the Silver Piano, a show that featured 100 amplified hand-held percussive instruments and accompanying live performances by the Terrible Twos, the Forest People and other bands.

Then the trio (with a little help from their friends) built a replica of the silver-walled space as part of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit's Considering Detroit exhibition. See the furious work involved in getting that job done here. When the exhibit opened, UFO DJs rolled out tunes by Michael Jackson and the Stooges, and people found  their way into the cardboard room and danced up a storm. More events are lined up for the artificial UFO Factory space (and in the main performance area at MOCAD) in the weeks to come.

This week, back at the original space (this is not as confusing as it sounds, trust us) UFO welcomes Japanese noise artist Astro (real name Hiroshi Hasegawa), a member of the group CCCC. Brainard describes his music as "harsh trance space noise played on an analog synthesizer." Oh, yeah, bring it on, we say. Also performing: TV Pow, Pod Blotz, Bill Nace and Slither.

Doors at 8 p.m., bands start at 9 p.m. Just so you know: shows at UFO are over at midnight. $5.
