10 Of Our Favorite Stories From The Last Year

1.  Michigan Aerotropolis

Cities follow businesses and businesses follow transportation. In a freshly global economy, highways, railroads, and seaports are making room for air travel. Get ready for the 'aerotropolis,' Michigan's newest urban model.

2.  Think Local, Act Regional

Since early childhood we're taught the value of sharing with others. So, why is it so hard for southeast Michigan to pool its resources and embrace regionalism? Do communities like Bloomfield Township and West Bloomfield really need separate fire departments? Fiscal reality may answer the question sooner than you think.

3.  Density Vs. Transit

The argument against mass transit in Southeast Michigan has always hinged on the region's lack of density. But that hasn't stopped sprawling metros like Phoenix and Salt Lake City from building highly successful light rail systems. What do they know that we don't?

4.  Double Lives

For most of us, it's tough enough juggling a single career and home life. Even Superman had to give up on Lois to pull double duty as a reporter and hero. Metromode introduces you to a pair of locals who have the talent and ambition to excel in two places at once. Prepare to feel inspired or inadequate.

5.  We Got Game

We've come a long way from the days of Pac-Man and Space Invaders. Computer games brought in $14 billion in revenue last year and several Michigan companies are claiming their stake in this ever-expanding technology.

6.  Ann Arbor, Welcome Detroit

Ann Arbor needs Detroit. Detroit needs Ann Arbor. As much as these places are their own communities, they need one another more than ever.

7.  Film Fest Frenzy

Could Traverse City or Saugatuck be the next Cannes? As Michigan becomes home to a growing number of film festivals, an enthusiastic band of cineastes are bringing Hollywood to the heart of 'fly-over' country.

8.  Foragers Guide To Employee Perks

The open house at Google AdWords in Ann Arbor caught the eyes of many 9 to 5ers left wondering why their companies don't provide catered lunches, free massages or superhero cubicle décor. Where are the Michigan businesses with benefits beyond the 401k? And why aren't there more of them? The region has some catching up to do when it comes to unorthodox work perks and places, but there's hope yet.

9.  From Scratch: whiteMAKO

Ready or not here he comes! There are plenty of 20 year-olds who think they can change the world but how many of them have started a lucrative web design and multimedia firm at age thirteen? Meet Chris Mwakasisi, CEO of whiteMAKO.

10. ReCellular Rings Green

Recycle your newspaper, plastic tubs, soup cans and ... your Blackberry? Dexter-based ReCellular recycles cell phones. The growing company has found a niche that's made profits and has people taking notice of its green ways.
