Wireless Oakland looks to finish first phase of project this month

The Wireless Oakland Project is expected to take some major steps forward in the next few weeks.

The project finished giving parts of Troy wireless Internet connection earlier this month and expects to expand that coverage area to six other communities by the end of April, completing its first phase. Those areas include Birmingham, Royal Oak, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Pontiac, Wixom and the rest of Troy. Wireless Oakland plans to have the entire county made wireless by the beginning of 2008.

"We believe everyone should have access to the Internet and we’re working to make sure everyone has it," says Phil Bertolini, deputy county executive and CIO for Oakland County.

Making Oakland County wireless would give free Internet access to the county’s 1.2 million residents and 300,000 daily visitors. Free internet service is being offered at a 128Kbps by MichTel Communications, which will charge fees for additional download speeds and services.
