The shiny new MGM Grand Detroit is rising on the west side of Detroit's downtown.

The brand-new hotel, casino and conference and banquet center are on
target for an October 2 opening. Tom Sherry, vice president of project
architect Hamilton Anderson Associates, says the upper floors of the
hotel rooms are being built out and that the focus is currently on the
lobby and the spa. The conference center and 14,000-square foot
ballroom, as well as the casino itself, is nearly complete.
As
for the spa, Sherry says, "MGM looked at it as a pretty intense need in
the marketplace." Of the project's overall quality, he says, "It's hard
for me to grasp right now what they are actually bringing to the market
in Detroit. They've really delivered." A particular highlight is the
Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina restaurants. "Any one of those would be
a coup for any city, but all at once, in one property..."
