Ferndale to introduce artsy bike racks

Bicycling in Ferndale is about to become a bit easier and more secure this spring. The city plans to install at least five new artistic bike racks in the downtown area as part of its on-going effort to encourage more non-motorized traffic.

The city expects to put in the bike racks in March or April. Each rack will be able to hold a handful of bikes and will be decorative and artistically unique. City officials are still determining where to put the new racks and what they will look like. Cost of the project is estimated at a few thousand dollars.

"That's the primary thing we're looking at doing this year," says Julie Hall, director of recreation for Ferndale.

Ferndale has added 3.5 miles of bike lanes in recent years and has established a bike network, called Ferndale Bikeway, to help encourage more bicycling in the city. The idea is to reduce traffic congestion and pollution while promoting a healthier, urban lifestyle. Read Metromode's recent article on the rising interest in bicycle commuting.

The city's sub-committee on bicycling, the Ferndale Bikeway Network Committee, is also set to meet again later this year to create new plans that will make the city friendlier to non-motorized traffic. For information on it, contact Hall at jhall@ferndale-mi.com or at (248) 544-6767.
