A new exhibit, the "Era of Elegance," has been installed that tells the
story of Detroit's role in the Great Lakes cruise ship industry. "It
covers how fancy these ships were, with their own silver service,"
explains Stone. He recounts that there were at least a dozen ships
traveling regularly between Lake Erie and Detroit, and several that
traveled on to Mackinac Island, Duluth and Chicago. There were other
lines that worked Lake Michigan exclusively between Chicago and St.
Joseph, Benton Harbor, Milwaukee, Petoskey, Charlevoix and Mackinac
Island.
"At that time, ships were faster than cars. After World
War II, roads got better and shipping lines went out of business," says
Stone. He has been collecting memories of passengers and employees of
the ships as well as those who fondly remember seeing them from the
shore to incorporate into the exhibit.
