Dearborn seeks public input on future of outdoor pools

Swimming in Dearborn could become more interesting soon. City officials are floating the idea (get it, floating?) of turning some of the city’s older pools into splash parks.

If there’s a silver lining to every problem, then it makes sense why Dearborn‘s leaders are looking at the city’s aging outdoor pools as an opportunity to create water parks.

All eight of the city’s outdoor pools, while still functional, are reaching the later stages of life. Some have been around as long as 40 years. The oldest water holes would require significant investments to fix them for the long term.

Or they could be replaced with modern splash parks. Ypsilanti, for example, has just such a facility in Rolling Hills Water Park, which has been a great success, drawing large crowds all summer long.

However, nothing has been decided. For now, city leaders are looking for public input on what to do before forming a long-term plan. Putting any plan in action requires a recommendation by the city’s Recreation Commission, a proposal by the administration and concurrence by the City Council.

To voice an opinion, call (313) 943-2350 or send a letter to Chairman, Dearborn Recreation Commission, 15801 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48126.
