Renovations to Tower Plaza in downtown Ann Arbor nearly complete

Work on the Tower Plaza is nearly complete with the $3.4-million renovation project expected to wrap up in April or May.

All of the exterior work on the downtown skyscraper is finished while construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the interior work. The renovation work being done is called “Curtainwall Remediation,” which is essentially a window-replacement project. A completely new exterior is constructed over the old windows and concrete columns. Once the new curtainwall is in place, crews are able to access the interior and remove the old windows and install new trim. The new curtianwall system will improve year-round comfort, create additional space in the units and dramatically update the building’s aesthetics.

Tower Plaza is the city’s tallest structure at 26 stories at the corner of Maynard and East William streets. It was built in the late 1960’s as an apartment building before being converted to condominiums in 1989. The building has a variety of unit styles, ranging from studios to penthouse suites. Several units are also used as offices. On a clear day people in the building can see skyscrapers in downtown Detroit and the Fermi nuclear plant in Monroe.

Detroit-based SmithGroup is served as the architectural firm for the project while Ann Arbor-based O’Neal Construction handled construction. Ann Arbor-based Kramer-Triad Management Group is the developer while Ann Arbor Commerce Bank is financing it.
