Trader Joe's to open in Gross Pointe by the end of year

Break out the Trader Jose salsa and chips! And how about  a six of TJ's Hofbrau Bock to wash it down?

One of the more highly sought-after specialty grocers for a downtown area, Trader Joes, is set to open in the Kercheval Place development in Grosse Pointe when construction of a new adjacent parking garage is finished before the end of the year.

Demolition of the old 1970s-era parking garage behind the development on Notre Dame Street near Kercheval Street just finished. The developer is now starting to build a new 220-space parking deck. The deck will be used by the occupants and patrons of the old, two-story Jacobson's store.

The building will have approximately 37,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and office space on the second floor.

Trader Joe's will occupy 13,000 square feet of that retail space, along with other anchor retail tenants, such as Jos. A. Bank, Coldwater Creek and Ann Taylor Loft.

The renovation of the old Jacobson's store is expected to play a major part in revitalizing Grosse Pointe's downtown district. It will fill a major void left when Jacobson's left that building empty several years ago.
