Royal Oak considers redevelopment of Center Street parking garage

The future of downtown Royal Oak's Center Street parking garage is still up in the air now that the city is evaluating how much useful life, if any, is still left in the structure.

The Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority is pushing for the redevelopment of the parking structure and adjacent surface lot, an effort that has stalled but is still very much alive.

"We would like to see a mixed-use redevelopment of that area," says Kevin Kalczynski, chair of the Royal Oak DDA.

However, the city has yet to reach that same conclusion. City officials are preparing to put out a request for proposals to conduct a structural engineering study on the parking garage at the corner of South Center and West Second streets. The city owns the 30-year-old structure and adjacent surface lot. The DDA proposed doing the study and wants the city to request for proposals to develop it into a new parking garage with retail space and condos.
