Ferndale to install first Woodward Tribute sculpture

Ferndale has received the green light on the first of many public art projects slated to appear along Woodward Avenue.

A 30-foot-tall column will go up on Ferndale's north side on the median at Cambourne Street. Its design is inspired by and pays homage to the Woodward Dream Cruise. Construction of the solar-powered column is expected to begin later this month. The goal is to tell Woodward Avenue’s story and increase tourism.

Ferndale, Detroit, Berkley and Pontiac are each planning to build their own pillars along Woodward as part of the Woodward Avenue Action Association's Tribute Project. The series of 30-foot-high interpretive themed columns will be made mainly of glass and concrete. They will be internally illuminated to help depict visual elements of Woodward’s past, present and future, such as its history in autos, technology and music. Organizers of the program hope the columns will become part of future themed audio tours.

A portion of National Scenic Byway grants will fund the program.
