Novi-based Molecular Innovations Inc. is a biotechnology firm that provides reagents to scientific researchers for academic, institutional and commercial pharmaceutical uses. The company has about 250 products, including enzymes, antibodies, enzyme inhibitors and test kits.
The company was selected as one of Michigan's 50 Companies to watch.
Molecular Innovations' products play an important role in the development of new medical therapies. Genentech, a leading biotech firm, used one of their earliest products to develop a clot-buster medication that saves thousands of lives every year. Molecular’s products have also helped Wyeth Pharmaceuticals develop a promising drug that could prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Started in President and CEO Duane Day's garage, the life sciences firm opened their new 12,600 square foot laboratory in Novi late last year. The facility includes labs, a fitness center, cafeteria, conference room and a large warehouse.
Currently, Molecular Innovations has 10 employees and plans to grow their staff to 50 in their new $2.3-million headquarters and laboratory complex.
With the philosophy that a rising tide raises all boats, Day intends to make some of that facility an incubator for other startup biotech companies.
